The l.a. Eyeworks Story
l.a. Eyeworks was founded by Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California, where they opened a storefront in 1979.
The duo had set out on a mission to start a new conversation around eyewear, one that positioned eyewear design as an opportunity for artistic collaboration between designers and wearers.
In fact, the eyewear brand’s well-known ad campaign that featured hundreds of high-profile celebrities carried a tagline that aptly expressed the l.a. Eyeworks’ perspective:
“A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.”
With the likes of Ru Paul, Chaka Khan, Andy Warhol and Minnie Driver modelling l.a. Eyeworks frames, it’s no surprise that this brand has made its mark on the eyewear industry.
Many decades later, l.a. Eyeworks operates two retail stores in Los Angeles as well as a wholesale company that supplies artistic eyewear designs to independent opticians and retailers around the globe.
Their Commitment To Art
McReynolds and Gherardi infuse art and imagination into every aspect of their business.
You may be aware of their dazzling designs, memorable colour selections and bold shapes, but their commitment to art doesn’t stop there.
Every limited-edition design starts with a hand-drawn sketch. Their retail store windows are designed to be conversation-starters or, at the very least, thought-provokers, around the topics of culture, social equality and self-expression. Their exhibitions, events and commissioned works regularly put the spotlight on artists.
From their cleaning cloths to their eyewear cases, every opportunity for creativity is seized.
l.a. Eyeworks chooses to work with materials that provide the best eyewear experience for you. They mostly work with three different types of acetate: Acetate (Standard Acetate), HD Acetate (High-Density Acetate), and KM Acetate (KRYMIX 93 Acetate).
l.a. Eyeworks typically combines the different acetates along with other materials, like titanium to produce structurally strong and visually stunning frames.
The materials are initially moulded into shape using technology with the final touches finished by hand.
Together with l.a. Eyeworks, we’re making all your brilliant eyewear dreams come true. Highlight your whimsical side and express yourself with l.a. Eyeworks sunglasses and glasses.
